You’ve never been poor until you’ve been emotionally bankrupt. I felt led by God to write and publish my first book even though I did not have the money. In the beginning of my first national Valentine’s tour, right after speaking to a crowd of 200 in a Chicago bookstore and just before I started signing books, a 911 message came announcing the unexpected death of my thirty-three year-old brother. Less than thirty days following Scott’s funeral, I found a note that my fiancé was going to leave, my dog was dying from poison, my house was in foreclosure, and my ex-husband was suing for custody.

I was close to a mental breakdown. I knew I was helping people with my seminars and book, but I was still losing money. Well-meaning people advised, “Get a real job, find a publisher!” Four months later my seminar tour landed me in the red. I gave up. I called my attorney’s secretary and angrily announced, “That’s it! I quit! I fire myself! If God wants me to do this work, then he better send in the reserves!”

That same afternoon, I looked up and assumed the man wearing a stethoscope in my assistant’s office was Kathy’s ride. She had MS. Wrong! He was the Bug Doctor! Kathy called him to exterminate carpenter ants. With a quizzical look after he was done he said, “I never work on Tuesdays. I only help my son with his business on Saturdays, but I was led to take this call. I heard what you said and I want you to know that God already sent in the reserves before you called for them. I’m a minister! God wants you to continue your work or I wouldn’t be here!

I learned three valuable lessons:

  1. Thank God in advance for what you have requested.
  2. See the hand of God in everything, no matter how negative it seems. Perhaps you can barely see his fingertips, but remember there is always a plan.
  3. God makes House Calls!

Even though I hadn’t been overjoyed about spending money on bug removal when my house was in foreclosure, this is how God sent his messenger. As the Bug Doctor prayed with me, a different look came over his face. Just as he said, “My son’s business needs money, but god is prompting me to . . . “ he ripped up my $109.00 check. I cried like a baby. It felt so healing to be ministered to.

Now, no matter how things are financially, I never forget that healing from emotional bankruptcy. I have been blessed with a new spiritual partner who shares my faith and trust in God. I have retained custody of my daughter, still own my house, and my dog survived. After that “house call” nothing stops me following God’s will of teaching, writing and publishing.
